Recently, I had a chance to read the UnMarketing book. And the first thing that I want to point out is that it is not a usual book. It is more like a personal guide that will help you in your career and personal life. Scott Stratten lifts the curtains and shows simple ways to improve your business through social media.

In a modern world, most of us have at least a Facebook page. But do we really think about or try to transform our social media accounts into a powerful tool to engage with our customers? The number one thing that we need to understand is that our customers are the same people as we are. Do you like receiving cold calls? Your customers do not like it either. I think the main point that Scott Stratten wanted to point out is how it is important to build relationships with your customers. While other marketing books on bookstore shelves are focused on direct marketing techniques, UnMarketing focuses more on engaging with your clients. I very much enjoy the quote from the first pages of the book:

“If you believe business is built on relationships, make building them your business.”

Why I Think UnMarketing is Different

It is different for many reasons. First of all, Scott Stratten is a unique person. He is a viral marketer and Twitter lover with a personality. He has his own voice that is seen throughout the book. Secondly, he has great thoughts. I enjoyed reading this book because he is giving examples from his own life in every chapter, and he writes them in a funny way. I caught myself laughing aloud several times while reading the book. Also, Scott Stratten writes in a very conversational manner. After reading the book, I look at the author as my friend with whom I just had a conversation about “unmarketing” my business. This is just another example of how good he is; he built a relationship with me through the book.

My Takeaways

1) Trust is a number one priority. Period.

2) Always own your mistakes. Don't ignore bad comments on social media.

3) World of mouth is the most powerful tool. Don't underestimate it.

I believe that this is a great book and there are more takeaways. I want to know what you think about the book, and what are your takeaways from UnMarketing?

Stop Marketing. Start engaging. Write your comments below.
