Tribes: Book Review

In the modern world, everyone belongs to some kind of organization. It could be a student association, religious institution, or just a social media account. New generations like to be connected. That’s why they use Facebook and Twitter accounts, and almost always hold a phone in their hands. People want to be heard and understood by others as well as to be able to express their ideas freely. In other words, people want to be in a tribe.

According to Seth Godin, “A tribe is a group of people connected to one another, connected to a leader, and connected to an idea."

If there is a strong need for a tribe, there is also should be a strong need for a leader. In this book, Godin describes a tribe in details as well as how to become a good leader for a tribe. According to the author, “leading a tribe is the best life of all”

One of my favorite parts of the book is the part where Godin describes a tribe and why people want to belong to it. I agree with the author that our need for a tribe lies deep in our human nature and history. Back in the past, cave people were living together in a cave. They were afraid to stay alone, and even though they did not have a language to communicate, they needed one another. Now, we all can speak and express ourselves, and we all have different ideas. It gives us a whole new opportunity to create new tribes. I also agree with the author that people want to belong to more than just one tribe, but many. I looked to myself – I am a student, American Advertising Federation member, A-State International Association member, and I also have numerous social media accounts. My membership helps me to feel important. I think that I can make changes, and it is all in my control.

In my opinion, every CEO should look at his/her company as a tribe. There should be a great idea behind a business. People should know for what they are working eight or more hours a day. The idea can be big as pollution prevention and poverty elimination, or it can be small and very creative as a T-shirt bakery. Johnny Early, most famous by his nickname Johnny Cupcakes, is the CEO of the World’s first T-shirt bakery. His idea of doing business like that was very unique and that’s why he always has huge lines in his store. Moreover, Johnny is a great leader. He started 16 businesses before he was 16 years old. He knows how to generate ideas that would hold people together.

The author also mentioned that when people believe in what they are doing, they put more effort to it. Even though people like to get paychecks, it is much better to work and do what you like to do.

I think that this book can be used as a helpful tool for people who want to become great leaders or who want to create any kind of movement. The book talks about different kinds of tribes and how to communicate within a tribe or with outsiders. I hope that after reading this book, people would go and make positive changes in the world.
